There are five basic ways to dread your hair: Backcombing method, Twist and rip method, Gel and wax method, Natural method, Interlocking or latch hook method. You start with one piece of hair at a time using a special latch hook tool. The tool resembles a crochet needle. The method is actually braiding your hair backwards from the tip to the root. The process is long and in the beginning you may be tempted to give up, but the end result is an instant head of dreadlocks that look fabulous. If you don’t want to do this yourself, there are locticians who specialize in the latch hook method who can do all the work for you.

Maintaining Dreadlocks For a Stylish Image

Tuesday, September 7th, 2010

More people are choosing to dreadlock their hair. It is a low maintenance hairstyle as well as a statement. Dreadlocks create a certain image. If you want to keep them looking nice then it is important that you understand the best methods for maintaining dreadlocks. It doesn’t involve much effort to keep them in good condition.

First of all it is important to continue to wash you hair. Just because you have dreads doesn’t mean you should stop cleaning your hair. If you wash your dreads at least once every week it will stop any nasty smells developing. It is best to use a shampoo that is natural and doesn’t leave any soapy deposits behind as otherwise the residue can loosen the dreads. You may notice that over time some dreads begin to grow out. This is because the new hair next to the roots is not dreaded. To fix this problem you should rub and twist these new lengths of hair every couple of weeks. If you place the un-dreaded hair in between your hands and rub gently until the strands start to knot you will have much tighter dreads.

Many people choose to use wax to maintain their dreads. This also helps to give the hair some nutrients. There are various types of waxes that you can buy, it may be best to choose a product that has been specially designed for maintaining dreads. You can add wax to your hair around once a month. Only a small quantity needs to be applied to the areas of dreads that are becoming loose. Make sure you squeeze and press the wax into the dread rather than just leaving a big globule of wax stuck to the outside. If you have dark hair then wax deposits may be more visible, to fix this you can blow dry your dreads to melt the wax deep into the locks.
